Bay 3, Rosyth Dockyard

Bay 3 forms part of Babcock's continued investment in shipbuilding infrastructure at Rosyth Dockyard, supporting the expansion of an existing manufacturing facility within one of the UK's most important naval construction hubs.

Client

Babcock

Location

Rosyth, Scotland

Principal Contractor

Robertson

Careys was appointed by Robertson Construction to deliver the enabling works and reinforced concrete substructure package, including site clearance, concrete breakout, gas plinth installation, piling platform preparation, earthworks, excavation, pile cropping and infill, foundations, pile caps, ground beams, ground floor slab construction, service connections and the installation of cast-in items.

Delivered within a live operational naval dockyard, the project required careful coordination with ongoing dockyard activities and adjacent major developments, including the New Build Hall and Interim Waste Storage Facility. Despite significant site constraints, the team successfully completed the substructure works, enabling handover to the structural steel contractor. The project involved the placement of approximately 600m³ of concrete and the installation of 5,400m² of reinforcement mesh.

One of the project's greatest challenges was logistics. The site was bounded on three sides by operational factory buildings and on the fourth by the dockyard security perimeter, severely restricting access, storage and material movements. Through detailed planning and close collaboration with Robertson Construction, Babcock and dockyard stakeholders, Careys maintained safe and efficient operations while achieving key programme milestones.

Operating within Rosyth's highly regulated environment also required strict compliance with Ministry of Defence security procedures. A dedicated Pass Manager, rigorous workforce management processes and close coordination with security teams ensured all access and clearance requirements were met without impacting delivery.

Drawing on extensive experience working within Rosyth Dockyard, Careys successfully managed complex stakeholder interfaces, challenging logistics and demanding security requirements, delivering the project safely and efficiently while helping support the continued growth of the dockyard's shipbuilding capabilities.
