Careys installs two huge tower beams at One Nine Elms in Wandsworth

Careys Civil Engineering has reached yet another milestone on the One Nine Elms project in Wandsworth, London, with our recent successful installation of two massive transfer beams.

On this project, we have been appointed by principal contractor, Multiplex, to carry out an extensive substructure works package. This includes the construction of both of the three-level basements for the development’s 43-storey River Tower and 56-storey City Tower – which we have elected to do using an innovative top-down construction method.

Once completed, the City Tower will become one of the tallest residential skyscrapers in Europe, transforming the skyline of Wandsworth.

An impressive achievement on a landmark project

The installation of the two transfer beams at One Nine Elms marks our latest significant achievement on this project— following up on our largest ever continuous concrete pour, which took place in March of this year. Both of these accomplishments demonstrate our ability to overcome logistical challenges, and represent important steps on our way to successfully delivering this project.

Due to the sheer size of the tower beams - with transfer beam one weighing 62 tons and transfer beam two weighting 74 tons – we needed to secure a permit from Transport for London and the local council to close the surrounding roads. This was necessary in order to allow for the siting of a specialist 1,000-ton mobile crane on Wandsworth Road.

Once the transfer beams had arrived on site, we utilised the mobile crane to install them. This process only took a couple of hours to complete, once everything was set up.

The transfer beams are positioned over the Thames Sewer, which we repaired last year. They provide the transfer structure over the sewer, which will facilitate the construction of the City Tower.
