Careys has successfully delivered a lower carbon concrete trial on the airfield for London Gatwick, working collaboratively with Heidelberg Materials and Ramboll UK. This latest installation provides valuable validation of cement-replacement mixes (using 20% Ground Granulated Blast-furnace Slag) in a live operational environment. Performance monitoring will continue over the summer, as this lower-carbon concrete is being considered for full implementation next winter should all testing requirements be met. If implemented this would support an estimated carbon reduction of over 10% against current material used, equating to approximately 140 tCO₂e fewer emissions - a meaningful contribution to London Gatwick’s Construction Sustainability Strategy.

This milestone marks our return to London Gatwick following the recent award of the Taxiway 2B rehabilitation project. The works include the breakout and relay of approximately 10,000m³ of concrete, replacement of Aeronautical Ground Lighting, and installation of new drainage across the taxiway.

A huge well done to the Careys team working in partnership with the London Gatwick construction delivery team for driving innovation on the ground and helping shape lower‑carbon solutions for the future of aviation infrastructure.
